Nurses' Views on Bedside Handoffs: A Scoping Review
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background:
Communication among healthcare professionals is crucial for patient safety. The handover between nurses represents an essential moment in nursing practice, but it can pose risks if not conducted optimally. Involving the patient in this process enhances the quality of care by considering the patient as an active participant in their care process.
Objective:
The aim of this Scoping Review was to explore nurses' opinions on the benefits and challenges of bedside handover to understand how this practice influences the quality of care, patient safety, and nurse satisfaction.
Method:
A Scoping Review was conducted following the methodology of the Joanna Briggs Institute and the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Methods and results were reported in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta- Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews.
Studies in English, French, and Italian were included without time restrictions, and 24 relevant articles were selected.
Results:
Most studies originate from Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, with a prevalence of qualitative methodologies. Nurses acknowledge the benefits of bedside handover, such as improved continuity of care, communication, and patient trust. However, concerns about privacy, the time required, and the anxiety felt by less experienced staff members also emerge.
Discussion:
If well-implemented, bedside handover can enhance safety, transparency, and satisfaction for both patients and staff. However, to overcome the challenges identified, it is necessary to invest in specific training for nurses, focusing on communication skills and managing emotional dynamics.
