Territorial Pulmonology in Veneto An Integrated Model for the Management of Chronic Respiratory Diseases

Abstract

Background: Territorial Pulmonology (PT) represents a fundamental healthcare approach for the management of chronic respiratory diseases outside of the hospital. This approach is highly relevant for regions like Veneto, where an aging population and the prevalence of diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) require sustainable and effective healthcare models. Objectives: To analyze the organization, clinical objectives, services offered, and challenges of pulmonary care in the region, providing a perspective and example of how these services have been implemented in the ULSS 7 Pedemontana. Results: A survey was conducted among 210 general practitioners (GPs) [response rate 41%, of which 87% were GPs working in clusters]. The survey provided information on the service's appreciation and the perceived usefulness of teleconsultations and spirometry testing within the Health Centers, with 88% of respondents in favor of implementing the method. Discussion: The higher response rate observed among GPs working in associated forms suggests the usefulness of the model for organizing PDTA. Conclusions: PT is a useful model for addressing community requests and promoting the management of chronic conditions in collaboration with general practice. Outpatient spirometry is a valued diagnostic tool.
