Chemistry and Dentistry
Main Article Content
Abstract
The history of modern dentistry includes among its pioneers the chemist and physician Domenico Morichini who, through chemical analysis of the fossil teeth of a perfectly preserved Elephas dating back to the Middle Pleistocene, identified the presence of fluoride in the form of sodium fluoride or stannous fluoride. A similar result was then found in the examination of human teeth.
This paved the way for a better understanding of the chemical composition, changes in which have shown that tooth decay occurs when cariogenic bacterial species, like Streptococcus mutans, a Gram-positive facoltative anaerobic bacterium increase at the expense of sapropbic species.
Morichini also conducted research on light and the speed of propagation being one of the first to suggest the electromagnetic nature of solar radiation and hypothesizing that light could contain both magnetic and electric fluids. The beginnings of dentistry as a medical discipline date back to 7000 a.C. .
The history of medicine has evolved into a moderne medicine that uses advanced tratments for diagnosis and therapy using new technologies including artificial intelligence.
